Interview with Rhyme Scheme

The Carolina Inquirer sits down with rising hip hop recording artist Rhyme Scheme to talk about his forthcoming All Black album soon to be released through SMG Global Network, possibly working with producers from the Carolinas, his single "4 Letters" and a lot more!  Read all about what this artist has to say......

The Carolina Inquirer:  What has Rhyme Scheme been up to so far in 2013?

Rhyme Scheme:  2013 has been a busy year. I've been pushing my single "4 Letters" to get worldwide exposure. I've been working on collaborations and performing across the country.

The Carolina Inquirer:  For those that haven't heard you yet, want makes Rhyme Scheme different from all the other artists out there right now?

Rhyme Scheme: Rhyme Scheme expresses reality in music.  I like to speak to the common man and share his story through music.

The Carolina Inquirer:   Right now you have a single and music video out called "4 Letters", could you tell the readers a little something about your single?

Rhyme Scheme: "4 Letters" talks about scenarios of love.  We have all experienced love.  Sometimes love is fun, sad, complicated, and intense.  The  song has many emotions.

The Carolina Inquirer:  Do you plan on filming another music video?  If so, for what song and what concept  do you have for it?

Rhyme Scheme: I plan on filming a video for my track " Can't Stop". The video will show my struggle in music and how I stayed dedicated.

The Carolina Inquirer:  You recently signed a 2 year distribution deal with SMG Global Network/ Universal Digital Music Group.  What lead to your signing and why did you decide to release your upcoming album All Black with this company?

Rhyme Scheme:  I was contacted by an A & R from SMG Global Network regarding my track "4 Letters".  The popularity of the track lead to my signing. I decided to drop All Black because of the buzz I have been receiving.

The Carolina Inquirer:  What can listeners expect to hear on your All Black album?  Who did you work with and what topics are you addressing?

Rhyme Scheme:  All Black address many entertaining social issues. The title speaks for itself. "What is life being Black?" " Living All Black" . These are a few lines from the album. 

The Carolina Inquirer:  How would you describe the overall feel of All Black?

Rhyme Scheme:   All Black has the feel of Tupac's album Me Against the World. 

The Carolina Inquirer:  Where are you from?

Rhyme Scheme:   I'm originally from Detroit, MI.  I started my music career in Los Angeles.  My style of music is a mixture of midwest/west coast.

The Carolina Inquirer:  Have you ever been to North or South Carolina?  If so, what was your experience?

Rhyme Scheme:  I've been to both North and South Carolina. I can see myself moving to Charlotte one day. The Carolinas have that home feel.

The Carolina Inquirer:  Have you collaborated with any artists or producers out here?

Rhyme Scheme: I plan on working with a few producers in the near future from the Carolinas.

The Carolina Inquirer:  What are your plans for the rest of 2013?

Rhyme Scheme:  After dropping All Black, I will start working on some fusion tracks. Maybe a few bilingual songs with a island influence.

Interview with Mono Bagends

 
On special occasions such as this one, we like to branch out and speak with independent artists that don't live in the area that are making waves and major moves and speak with those artists about what they are doing and show them a little of that Carolina love no matter where they lay their head.  This week we got in touch with rising New York based recording artist Mono Bagends.  Mono Bagends has a popular single and youtube video by the name of "On Fire" that recently received over 50,000 video views in just one short Month, and his single is currently getting lots of love and support from DJs and radio stations across the Nation!  Read all about this artist in our interview with him below!


 
The Carolina Inquirer:  In your own words, how would you define yourself as an artist?
Mono Bagends:  Ground Breaking....My style is unique..I truly don't sound like anyone else. I want to make positive inspirational music to uplift people. As a nation, we are are going through tough times...I want to be a voice people can turn to give them hope. You can achieve a lot via music


Your single "On Fire" has been getting a lot of spins on commercial and non commercial radio across the nation and just recently your official youtube video for the single has reached over 50,000 + views in just one month, for those that still may not be familiar with the single could you tell the readers what they are missing?
The song is complete.  Chorus, lyrics, flow and the beat all come together.  It makes you feel good...it's one of those records you keep playing over and over.  It's inspirational.  It's about a man going through his inner struggles to have his breakthrough.  The video brings the song to life.  The video just broke through 50,000.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ANyvlNgsx8

Although you are from New York, your single has sort of a "South Eastern" feel to it....then we found out you collaborated with a Virginia based producer for this single.... what made you want to reach out to Luxxury Music to produce the song? 
At the time, I wasn't sure what I was looking for and I heard it....once I heard it I had to have it. I knew it was a hit. I didn't know where they were from when I first heard it but I have always worked with down south producers.  It doesn't matter to me what region people are from...if we can make something hot...let's do it.


Have you collaborated with anyone else in the South East? 
To be honest...I am not sure.  Due to the internet a lot of times I work with people and never meet them.  I more worked with people from Texas so previous songs have that south flavor to it but it's not the south east.


You recently linked up with a North Carolina based Promotions & PR Firm to help spread the word of your music through the Internet, do you plan on working with anyone else here in North Carolina? 
I don't have any plans at the moment but I am open to working with anyone I can make great music with.

Have you been down to North or South Carolina to perform?
Not yet....the closest I have been to perform is probably Virginia....have also done shows in Miami, Texas and Arkansas in the south. North Carolina is one of the states I have always wanted to visit and definitetly would be open to it if the right opportunity arose.



Are you familiar with any of the artists or producers here? 
 I can't say that I am as of right now. I used to like Petey Pablo.


What do you like to get into outside of music? 
 I enjoy spending time with God, working out and watching football.


What's next for Mono Bagends? 
Only God knows...this song is really taking off...everyday I am being interviewed for different publications and more and more opportunities keep popping off. I am interested to see what's next and the unknown about it makes it exciting.

Ike Ellis: The King of The Carolinas

 

In this Interview, The Carolina Inquirer sits down with rising rap sensation Ike Ellis to discuss his forthcoming album Cornbread (due June 12 2012), his opinions on the music scene in The Carolina and why he's now known as The King of the Carolina!

The Carolina Inquirer:  What makes you "The King of the Carolinas"? 

Ike Ellis:  I am glad you ask me this question.  Now it is my belief that as Black men in America, we were stripped from our heritage, culture, identities during slavery.  Throughout history we have been taught to be inferior, mediocre, second class citizens.  The mentality has been inbreed-ed within our culture to be less which in actuality we are extraordinary individuals.  We were kings in Africa.  We had everything, as if we were royalty.  Many times I am misunderstood, as if I am an arrogant person who thinks I rule the Carolinas.  Wrong answer, I am a confident individual who refuse to look at myself less than the Black king we were mean to be.  I just happen to be from North Carolina. If I was in New York, Florida, or Arizona, I still wouldn’t consider myself less than a King in my mind.  Every black man in America is in some shape or form decedents from the kings who are transported thru the Atlanta slave trade.  I think, therefor I am, bottom-line.

Who are some of the artists here in The Carolinas that you have worked with?

I have  worked with numerous artists in some type of way, whether it be at an event, but musically or composed songs with I would say, Broadway Miller, Young Niters,  Elevator Jay, Ricky Ruckus, Paradox, Lava Izzle, Picasso, bobby Bugatti , just to name a few.   Back in 2010 composed a song called the “Carolina conglomerate” that was crazy.

Who are some of the artists here in The Carolinas that you respect, that you haven't worked with yet?

Umm I respect every artist in the Carolinas that's true to this Carolina grind.  The truth is [that] we are limited when it comes to the resources or access to the industry, which makes us have to work just that much harder.   I support the grind whenever approached on a business aspect of this music but, artist I would like to work with some of the R & B artists, Hugg E Bear to make a hit song. 

 

Who are some Carolina based artists that you would like to work with eventually?

Whoever willing to make that music for the love of it, I will work with from the Carolinas.

As for producers... who are some of the beat makers here in The Carolinas that you've worked with?

Who are some of the Carolina based producers that you would like to work with in the future?

It would an honor for that to happen.

Yea I got a few concepts with that make some powerful music that way.

 

Now I know this question has come up a lot in various interviews from Carolina based artists, but in your opinion why do you think that North and South Carolina have been over looked, and never really made a huge impact in the music industry?

There are a few reasons.  There is no dedicated market for the Carolina artist to establish underground so the commercial music industry doesn’t respect our grind.  The numbers is the only thing that matter when it comes to the music industry.  Who we know sold 100,000 copies independently?   Question, where can a consumer go to buy the music of a Carolina artist?  This is large market, but broken into pieces.   The music industry see money that can be made, and we have not made any money.  The radio, the music industry, needs to see numbers.  The artists have to have their stuff together to generate the money, so the music industry would not need to come here and give a deal, but wish we would break some of that bread with the music industry.  The control comes with the influential figures that can make the decisions.  It’s a bigger picture than the artist, the promoter, the DJ, and the radio.  Its nothing for a rapper to come from another state and get major spins on a radio power house?  There are promoters who take advantage of the artist constantly with false promises, fake contests, and bias opinions.  

What advice would you give up and coming artists based here in the Carolinas? 

Focus on the business aspect of making music, understanding what makes the money, generate the money by understanding your target market or the people that is going to spend money. Always try to Network with people who can make a difference in your career.   Stay far away from false profits, and dream takers. The object is to get paid, not get hustled by some fake promoter. Break bread with other artist, build your circuit for everybody to eat, not just yourself.  Make music your target market is going to feel.  Be true to yourself as an artist, as am individual. Invest in yourself, if you believe in yourself.  Don’t invest in somebody else nightmares.  Keep grinding in all the markets not just your home town.  You are not doing nothing until you hit five cities hard with your product. 

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? 

I see myself with a certified business generating income for my family to be straight.

Eric Brayman talks about Blue Collar Rap, Queen City Hip Hop and Clubs with Strict Dress Code Policies

This week, The Carolina Inquirer gets in touch with a popular hip hop promoter/ DJ that has been one of the major backbones in Charlotte, NC (the Queen City's) hip hop scene for years.  Take a look at what Eric Brayman has to say about Charlotte's underground.

The Carolina Inquirer:  Underground hip hop events in Charlotte, NC are usually known for drawing crowds primarily comprised of other local rappers, D.Js and beat makers... would you say that the events you hold are different, and if so... what does your events have that would interest the every day person that doesn't participate in hip hop?   
Eric Brayman:  We are the outcasts of the local music scene! The Blue Collar rappers!! The music heard is not that of average Hip Hop events. Its not going to have you grinding on the dance floor. It is more of head nod and turn to your friend and say "did he just say that" when a rapper says something clever.  They don't talk about pushing drugs and cars with 58" rims. They talk about real life. True Hip Hop. Its def not the 106 n Park crowd!!  Yes we have beat makers, DJs and other rappers. Birds of a feather flock together!  As to an everyday person at my event. Well, I have turned some old "rap sucks" guys into fans!! The music done by the artists that frequent my event is very different from commercial Hip Hop so they are really blown away by the different sounds and styles. I like to describe the artists that come to my events would rather go on tour with KRS ONE than Lil' Wayne! The Freestyle Battle cypher always makes people "ooh and awe".  It's part of the reason I do this.  It is Hip Hop at its truest form.  It amazes some that don't know Hip Hop in that way. They wont hesitate to come back.  Its great entertainment.  It also amazes the ones who see it all the time but just love it! 

Who are some of the acts that frequently perform at your event? 
Charles Herron. Keyza Soulsay, JJ Bass, Ike Turnah, Panamah Ski, Dee Richards, Big Treal, Raz Omega, Mr Invisible, Salty Dogs, Caliba, K-Baz, MC Cataclysm, Fallen Angels, Stereogram, Chekar Kareem, K-Baz, THE COMDOT and so many more new and old!!  We are very lucky to have so much talent!!!


How would you describe the hip hop scene in Charlotte, NC as a whole?There is not a Hip Hop scene.  There are scenes!!  We live in a southern city with people from all over the world living here.  Therefore the styles are all over the map.  There is a scene for club style hip hop.  I guess they do well.  I don't really feel that type of music so I don't know much about how they do it.  There are the southern trapper style they mix with the club cats but neither mess with us. There is some crossover here and there with the back packers and classic boom bap style kids and just new school. All in all each group sticks together. 


What do you say needs to improve or change in Charlotte's hip hop scene?

Speaking for our movement, We need smaller venues open to doing shows and not charging hundreds of dollars to do it. I don't have a home club to throw shows as I did in the past with The Room and The Spot so now Its hard to put on a real local concert and make it profitable for anyone other than the club. Artists end up splitting a hundred or 2 when the the bar rakes it in and the promoter get pennies. Its almost as bars hear hip hop and they think Bentlys and bottles of champagne so these people must have money! Well not in our case again we are blue collar!!! Dont get me wrong. There are a few venues that welcome us with open arms cause we drink a lot of beer and never cause trouble. Never a fight. We would rather argue politics or why Lil' Wayne should die! 


On your Facebook wall you have expressed your disdain about certain venues and their strict and seemingly unfair dress code policies, would you care to elaborate on that right now?

I hate dressing up going to the club!!!  I would rather drink and dance in sneakers or Timbs than dress shoes.  I'm more comfortable and that makes my mood better as the night goes on.  I can be grown and sexy in Timbs I'm almost 40!!!  I'm pretty grown.  I understand you want to have a more formal event or establishment so basketball jerseys and hats might not be appropriate however I think some have taken it to another level.  I was denied entrance to an Epicenter club because I had on a polo, shorts, and Timberlands.  I was told by the door guy I did not meet the dress code and if he let me in his boss would have his ass ok no prob.  No fight outta me, not my kinda place or music anyway.  I was only going in support of a friend.  As me and my wife who was dressed great and hot are talking about our next move.  I was tapped on the shoulder by an Epicenter security guard who was accompanied by a police officer. The security guard then proceeds to tell me that Timberlands are not allowed at the Epicenter after 9pm and I had to leave the premises now and was escorted by the two of them down 3 flights of stairs until we got to the courtyard where 4 more CMPD joined them and walked 2 steps behind until we hit the side walk.  UNREAL.  I had went to the Epicenter after a dinner at LUCE an incredible Italian fine dining restaurant and was welcomed with open arms and treated like me and my wife were king and queens.  2 blocks away we were treated like we were homeless.  I was there supporting a friend again last week at the Epicenter again and watched in amazement as the bouncer of a club would not let one of 2 men in because of sneakers.  They both had jeans oxford shirts and jeans and white sneakers.  One had white puma soccer sneakers [so] he was ok.  The other had white running shoes and he could not get in.  Both brand new and white.  I laughed.  Though I will give the Epicenter this. They do not discriminate in their idiocy. Those two gentlemen were Indian and I am white.  They need to realize to stop being petty there are so many "high class" clubs and clubs in general. With people not spending as they were a few years ago they should really lighten up!!

What other events do you have lined up for the future? 
I have been toying with a regional show mixing locals with others from around the Carolinas trying build a family of Carolina hip hop not just queen city hip hip.  Just trying to find the right venue.  I tried at 2 [venues] and would be doing it at 1 of them if they had a stage and monitors not just a dance club.  I'll find a good home that wants good hip hop. Good things take time!
